Regenerative Moringa
A Pathway to regenerating ecosystems and food systems in The Gambia
The land use history of The Gambia has been shaped by the extraction of natural resources, exploitation of people and more recently the rise of chemical based agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of Gambian life accounting for 25% of the economy.
The current food system in Gambia is unsustainable with green revolution policies and practices eroding traditional agricultural methods, poisoning the soils, homogenizing genetic diversity, creating input dependencies and debt and fragmenting cultural practices.
This undermines Gambian food sovereignty, lessens public health and degrades ecosystems.
50% of the Gambian’s daily protein comes from fish and industrial overfishing of protected waters threatens local food security and local livelihoods.

The Brief
The Regenerative Moringa project proposes to work with Berending Village Development Committee and associated local partners to:
Co-develop an agroforestry system and associated enterprises on local ancestral and common lands, in a way that builds the capacity and capabilities of local stakeholders, so that regenerative agricultural practices can scale and contribute locally to climate change, food security and economic prosperity.

Our Approach
Working with local partners Earth Farm the project’s goal is to demonstrate the role of regenerative agricultural systems in contributing to climate change, food security and prosperity in The Gambia, through:
- Restoring food sovereignty through building local capabilities and trainings
- Nurturing food security through co-developing regenerative agricultural practices
- Developing strategies to deploy local foods through evolving socio-economic livelihoods
- Developing national and international markets through profitable and meaningful enterprises
The project will leverage the potential of Moringa as a ‘keystone crop’ – a crop that can have a disproportionate impact on the regeneration of local systems. This project and the potential of Moringa can contribute to multiple UN SD goals including, No poverty, Zero hunger, etc.

The Challenges
Coordinating local partners and establishing the opportunity, designing the project and developing the approach.
Writing the bid and raising the funds.

The Outcome
Start up wellness brand Earth Farm selling direct sales to UK customers
Project designed and exploring funding options – to request a project proposal and budget breakdown or to learn more.
The Future
We hold the premise that a placed based response and collaborative approach will inspire long-term partnerships and a positive impact on sustainable land-use across The Gambia.

We have evolved agricultural practices and principles, are developing a wellness brand and are now seeking to work on the transformation of the food system in The Gambia.
Landstory have given us energy, impetus and a lot of knowledge to help develop the project.
We are very grateful for their support in helping us to challenge our assumptions.
