Chalk Landscape Partnership

Evolving a new ethic of chalk land management

Chalk landscapes are home to precious chalk streams, chalk grasslands and an immense array of species that once flourished. These landscapes have been subject to land management processes driven by industrial systems and have become severely degraded over time.

The Brief

Landstory supported an emerging partnership group to co-develop discussions around the role of a Chalk Landscape Partnership in co-developing a new ethic of chalk landscape management.

We explored specific chalk projects and wider initiatives as well as to explore governance, event and engagement strategy and funding.

Landstory supported a newly forming partnership of conservation organisations to crystalise and develop their goals and methods of engaging with land managers and farmers.

Our Approach

Online workshops with a core team

2 in person workshop days with wider partnership group and stakeholders

Summary report and event strategy for farmer engagement

The Challenges

Identifying a core tension between conservation and farming – that there were no farmers or land managers present in the conversations around the partnership and its potential.

The Outcome

Core priorities were set around – communications, engagement, spatial planning, funding and governance. With a 1 year roadmap outlining core activities and actions.

The Future

We would love to see an event led strategy deployed that brings together land managers, farmers and conservation groups to explore the potential of how to develop a new ethic for management of Chalk landscapes.
